Take Control Of Your Household Maintenance

How To Keep Your Glass Railing Clean With Young Kids In The House

It is possible to maintain clean and streak-free glass railings when young kids are living in the home, but you'll have to do a little legwork to make it happen. Here are a couple of things you can do to keep your railings clean day in and day out:

Create a Rule Board

If the kids are allowed to play around your glass railings or touch them, the chances are that you'll be looking at smudge marks on a constant basis. So it's a good idea to create a basic rule board and hang it up near the railing to remind your little ones that they shouldn't be playing with, writing on, or excessively touching it throughout the day.

The sign should be large enough to catch your kids' eyes any time they're near it and easy enough to understand that they'll remember the rules with just a glance. Use a large piece of poster board and some markers to create the rule sign.

Consider simply writing the word "NO" at the top of the sign, and then drawing depictions of the things they shouldn't be doing, such as a child sliding on the railing or rubbing their hands over it. Use stencils to draw your graphics if you're not comfortable with your personal art skills. This is especially helpful if one or more of your children can't read.

Use Homemade Cleaner

The only way to ensure that your glass railings stay looking fresh and new is to clean them on a regular basis. The problem is that dangerous ingredients, such as ammonia and butoxyethanol, are found lurking in most commercial glass cleaners. With regular exposure, these cleaners can cause throat irritation, asthma, and even kidney or liver problems as time goes on.

Luckily, you can keep your railings clean and your family healthy by making some homemade cleaner for daily use – the kids can safely use the cleaner without having to worry about any exposure to toxins. Start by putting one part water and one part distilled vinegar into a spray bottle. Then add some naturally antibacterial essential oils to the mix to kill bacteria and create a pleasant fragrance. Try one or more of the following effective options:

  • Lemon
  • Rosemary
  • Lavender
  • Pine

Consider filling up two or three spray bottles with different kinds of essential oils so you can switch up the way your home smells from day to day depending on your mood.

These tips should help make it easy to keep your glass railings clean no matter what day of the week it is.
